“A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”
–James Madison (letter to W.T. Barry, 4 August 1822); Reference: Letters and other Writings of James Madison, vol. 3 (276).
This is why I do not understand why people who do not educate themselves even a little bit during these serious times think it is important for them to vote. That’s correct. That is what I said. If you don’t care enough to educate yourself, then why are you voting? You have no concept about what your vote will do to ME, who HAS taken the time because I love my country enough to get informed about the situations we face, the people from which we have to choose, their policies, their backgrounds – not their pretty words they say now to get elected, and I have many months (in hours) educating myself as to who is behind each candidate.
I don’t expect you to do so much work. It is tedious, and it takes a lot of researching. That is why I do it for you. But I do NOT want you to just take my word for it! I am only a jumping off point, as should be any site that you read. Please, educate yourself. It is necessary if we intend to stay free…
Have a nice weekend.

Founders’ Daily Quote: 18 July 2008…
This is why I do not understand why people who do not educate themselves even a little bit during these serious times think it is important for them to vote. That’s correct. That is what I said. If you don’t care enough to educate yourself, then why…
Oh I know why they vote. They vote because their current hip-hop idol tells them to “vote or die”. They vote because they just became old enough to do so and they think that it’s “their civic duty”.
They vote because they have been taught (wrongly) that the purpose of government is to provide for their needs rather than to provide for their defense so that they can see to their own needs in security and liberty. Therefore they vote for those that promise to see to their needs and who tell them that to vote for “the other guy” is to vote for someone who wants to take away the bounty that government gives.
They vote because of the idealism of youth rather than the experience of maturity. They vote to protect their pleasures. They vote for the hope of change because they lack the patience to work within the system for the things that they desire.
They vote without thought or knowledge for that which gives them short term benefit at long term cost. In short they vote because it makes them feel good, and they hope to gain from it, never realizing what their ill-considered vote costs us all.
I have posted some really good Revolutionary War Quotes at my website http://www.revolutionary-war-and-beyond.com/revolutionary-war-quotes. Here are a few:
George Washington – “By the all-powerful dispensations of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability and expectation; for I had four bullets through my coat, and two horses shot under me, yet escaped unhurt, altho’ death was levelling my companions on every side.” – Letter to John A. Washington, July 18, 1755
James Madison – “We hold it for a fundamental and undeniable truth, ‘that religion or the duty which we owe to our Creator and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence.'” – Memorial and Remonstrance Against Religious Assessments, 1785
Ben Franklin – “O powerful goodness! Bountiful Father! Merciful Guide! Increase in me that wisdom which discovers my truest interest. Strengthen my resolution to perform what that wisdom dictates. Accept my kind offices to thy other children as the only return in my power for thy continual favours to me.” – Autobiography, his daily prayer, 1789
Thank you! These are wonderful quotes. May I inquire as to where do you find these? I wish I had many books with the texts of which these people actually said without any interpretation by a secularist or an atheist! *sigh* Again, thank you for these wonderful quotes. May I use them as quotes? I will give the credit to you, as I am NOT the NY Times who steals their ‘info’. 😉
Perri,
Stole my thunder on reasons why idiots vote (well, apart from another reason: collectors o “I Voted” stickers *heh*). Can’t add anything substantive.
Folks who base their votes on feelings, greed, stupidity and ignorance will be the final death of the republic. As I say in my blog’s header,
“In a democracy (”rule by mob”), those who refuse to learn from history are in the majority and dictate that everyone else suffer for their ignorance.”-third world county’s corollary to Santayana’s Axiom
Obama Faces Security Problem on Foreign Tour…
The Obama campaign staff is reportedly upset with John McCain for letting slip some details about Senator Obama’s highly-publicized trip to the Middle East. I have a hard time understanding their concern. Obama certainly has nothing to fear from the…..
I suppose that is why the Founders found it necessary to restrict VOTING to LAND OWNERS. Oh? Did I say something unkind? No, I believe not. I do not own any land, but if this were the law you can bet I’d run right out there and get me some!
Once the people have a FINANCIAL stake in their vote (say something like GAS prices rose to $4, hmm), they may just start thinking about others when they vote. I do not mean ‘think about others when they vote’ as a welfare tool, I mean it as a destroyer for all healthy but lazy people! HEY, get up off your…well, you know what…and get one of them there jobs that GWB is always saying that Americans won’t do! (If I hear that one more time…)
Thank you for stopping by, David! What a thrill running down my leg! (Is that what they say when they cover Obie?) lol.
Rosemary,

BTW: I wrote the 4th blurb.
I’m sorry, but I cannot figure out which one you are referring, Jon. The one with the #4 on it is the one that I wrote! LOL. Have a nice day.
PS. Thanks for the link!
Oh, the MinuteMen! Cool.
If you look at the blurbs for Hutson’s book, the 4th one is taken from a short book review I did of it for First Things.
Rosemary, I got the quotes from several places. Some from the web, some from different patriotic books. There are lots of them at http://www.revolutionary-war-and-beyond.com/revolutionary-war-quotes.html.
Quite a few of them mention their faith in God. Some can be taken as being anti-God if taken at first glance and if read alone. But if you take them in context and put them together with the person’s other writings and statements, those supposedly anti-God statements are really anti-religion statements. Do you know what I mean? They are usually criticisms of clergy or church abuses, rather than of God or the Bible itself. This quote from John Adams says it all:
“Spent an hour in the beginning of the evening at Major Gardiner’s, where it was thought that the design of Christianity was not to make men good riddle-solvers, or good mystery-mongers, but good men, good magistrates, and good subjects, good husbands and good wives, good parents and good children, good masters and good servants. The following questions may be answered some time or other, namely, — Where do we find a precept in the Gospel requiring Ecclesiastical Synods? Convocations? Councils? Decrees? Creeds? Confessions? Oaths? Subscriptions? and whole cart-loads of other trumpery that we find religion incumbered with in these days?” – Diary entry, February 18, 1756
And I love this one by Patrick Henry:
“It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” – Speech to the Virginia House of Burgesses, May, 1765
Have a great day!
That Patrick Henry is representative of the type of men I would prefer to have here today, rather than those womanized girly-men! I just adore him. Yes, it is very true that this is a Christian nation. I never said one thing toward the promotion of a federal Church! I would be the first in line to block it! No, I do, however, believe that Christianity is basis for all of our governments, constitutions, etc. The Bible does say we are to pray for our elected officials, but to bring them back to the Word of God! Not to continue sinning against God, man and themselves. Oh, let me stop before I get going. lol.
Thanks for stopping back over. Have a wonderfully blessed week.
