I’ve just learned that a Conservative blogger and talk radio show host, Pundit Review, and a leading Liberal blogger site, Blue Mass Group have decided to join forces (as it were) to raise money for the Jared C. Monti Scholarship Fund.

So who was SFC Jared Monti, and what did he do to deserve the highest achievement of all, the Medal of Honor?

When SFC Monti realized that a member of the patrol, Private First Class (PFC) Brian J. Bradbury, was critically wounded and exposed 10 meters from cover, without regard for his personal safety, he advanced through enemy fire to within three feet of PFC Bradbury’s position. But he was forced back by intense RPG fire. He tried again to secure PFC Bradbury, but he was forced to stay in place again as the enemy intensified its fires.

The remaining patrol members coordinated covering fires for SFC Monti, and he advanced a third time toward the wounded Soldier. But he only took a few steps this time before he was mortally wounded by an RPG. About the same time, the indirect fires and CAS he called for began raining down on the enemy’s position. The firepower broke the enemy attack, killing 22 enemy fighters. SFC Monti’s actions prevented the patrol’s position from being overrun, saved his team’s lives and in spired his men to fight on against overwhelming odds.

A remarkable man he was, and his legacy should continue. That is why I, even being on the other side of our beautiful country, am joining forces with them in contributing to the scholarship and asking others to do the same. Please blog about this if you have a blog, write about this is you have a website. Below you will find information so that you also may contribute.

Entering its fourth year of operation, the Jared C. Monti Scholarship Fund helps deserving young people with funds for college. You can learn about previous scholarship winners here.

If you noticed on Kevin’s site, there was also a box that included his radio show link. I could not for the life of me get that link for you. If you did not go to Kevin’s site (Pundit Review), please do. Leave him a nice comment as well. Thank you and have a blessed day.

May you walk with the LORD always, and when you cannot take another step, may He carry you the rest of the way until you can walk along side Him again.

This is a very special Hero who is close to many of our hearts. He shall surely be remembered forever. He is one of the four Navy SEAL’s who were in that God-foresaken land called Hindu Kush, Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. On this day, he went far above and beyond the call of duty to save his unit. There were four of them, only one survived that deadliest day of the US Forces since Operation Enduring Freedom began.

What this man did was incredible. He was the man on the radio, and they were 10,000 miles high trying to fight the Taliban after being ambushed. Earlier that day, they had accidentally run into a farmer and his son. They had to make a quick decision: Do they let them go so those Afghanis could give away their position, or should they get rid of any witnesses? They let them go, and these ungrateful pieces of trash gave away their position. The fight was a very long one, it lasted for what seemed like forever.

Lt. Murphy knew that if they did not get any help from overhead, they were not going to make it out of there alive. So what did he do? He made sure his unit was covered, and then he made himself a target. He had to go out into the open to get a radio signal, and he did so. He was killed trying to call for help. You can read about this act of heroism in Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (SEAL) Marcus Luttrell’s book, “Lone Survivor.”

While I cannot find my copy of the book right now (I’ve been cleaning), it is an incredible book, and I urge you to read it. If you really want to know what it is like to be in the US Armed Forces out there in the middle of nowhere, then this is the book for you.

There was a young gentleman who read Beyond Glory: Medal of Honor Heroes in Their Own Words by Larry Smith. After reading this book, he felt compelled to write a play about these men and tell their stories in words. It opened in 2004 “on the edge of Arlington Cemetery, at a small theater inside the Women in Military Service Memorial.” Eight of these men were chosen of the twenty-four available to represent the men to be honored. There was an apolitical play, meaning this was not about politics. It is about our Heroes.

So how did it Mr. Lang, the performer, come to travel the world performing his play for our men and women in the Middle East, on the DMZ (dividing line between North and South Korea, otherwise known as the ‘demilitarization zone’), Europe, and many other places? This is where our precious poets step up to the plate to support our Troops.

Mr. Peede had been asked to direct a new NEA [National Endowment for the Arts] program called Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience. Its intention was to help soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, or their families, to put their experiences into writing–fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The idea was suggested to NEA Chairman Dana Gioia, a poet, by Connecticut poet Marilyn Nelson, who’d recently served as a visiting writer at West Point. Good for the poets.

Reluctant to wait years for Congressional funding or to divert money from other NEA programs, Chairman Gioia sought private funding for Operation Homecoming. Quietly, the Boeing Company stepped up, ultimately giving $1.2 million. The soldiers’ tutors at NEA’s workshops included writers such as Barry Hannah, Tobias Wolff, Mark Bowden, Victor Davis Hanson and Tom Clancy. The result is a book, “Operation Homecoming” (Random House), which–again some understatement–is breathtakingly good. [Continue reading Mr. Henninger’s article.]

It is a wonderful thing that has been done, finally, by the NEA and the Opinion Journal’s article. You may purchase Operation Homecoming at Amazon.com. I thought you might like to know. Have a wonderful day! 🙂

Editor’s Note: There will be another open trackback today. If you have an article you’ve written and would like to share it with others, please feel free to link it here.
